Changing the Narrative of Human Experience through Artificial Intelligence

Born into the digital generation, the innovations and destruction that artificial intelligence (AI) has caused has become more apparent than ever. Artificial intelligence not only requires human intelligence, but uses machine learning to solve problems at a much faster rate than humans are capable of, AI has become such an ingrained part of everyday society and basic human needs.

Voice assistants such as Alexa, Siri, Google Home, and Amazon Echo are easily accessible AI tools commonly found in most households that offer instantaneous answers to practically any question asked. Yoodli, a public speaking communications tool, allows students to develop adequate soft skills through AI-powered feedback. Another application of AI, Canvas Dx, is a program that uses machine learning algorithms to analyze children’s physical behaviors and responses to questions through supervised video. This program takes on the role of detecting early mental disorders in young children such as depression or autism. There are many beneficial resources and useful applications that AI offers despite the technological overload older generations often experience with the modern generation.

But, how will AI affect the way young generations learn, think independently, creatively, and originally? Will AI inhibit individuals from working harder for longer periods of time? These are the types of questions that raise concerns for the long-term impact of AI and the “human experience”. According to the World Economic Forum, in 2030, students will be learning from “robot teachers” or computers 10 times faster than today. In addition to the economic sector, AI is impacting human consumerism and marketing. Big companies including Tiktok, Instagram, and Twitter are popular social media platforms that use AI algorithms to keep users constantly engaged based on media they’ve previously shared or liked. This marketing strategy allows companies to gain customer-specific knowledge, behaviors, choices, and to promote products. Face identification and social media filters are simpler examples of technological AI that are so universally used by the digital generation and will continue to become more advanced. AI is also being used as a form of communication in ordering through fast-food chains, self-checkout, and even AI-driven robots are utilized in grocery stores for customer assistance. These innovative technologies account for a lack of human interaction, connection, and conversation, for less waiting time and instantaneous assistance. AI also continues to replace jobs including customer service, data entry, receptionists, therapists, retails, and analysts, that can be done more efficiently in a shorter amount of time than humans could ever be capable of.

AI makes for an easier future, but what does this mean for human communication, learning, and education? The goal here is to change the narrative around the way humanity has been shaped by technological innovation. Humanity must continue to progress with AI for maximum efficiency, productivity, and learning, but in ways that are ethical, fair, and allow individuals to make their own decisions, think independently, and prevent codependency on technology. We must think in terms of where AI is heading for not only Gen Z, but generations to come.
