Changing The Narrative Of Work In The AI Economy

From a young age, I have been aware of the immense political polarization throughout the United States. In recent years, we’ve seen a harrowing portrayal of the liberal failure to meet the needs of the working class in this country. So, politicians need to understand how the government can meet the needs of an ignored working-class riddled with unemployment, inadequate social programs, and lackluster political representation at a time of technological revolution.

The emergence of disruptive technologies invokes hope and fear. For many Americans, Artificial Intelligence is a tool that will make them economically redundant and thus take them out of a job. Although, for the few, AI will revolutionize productivity and produce millions in profit. Hence, AI is not a mutually beneficial technology for the employed and employer.

There is a consensus that AI needs to be contained in mainstream politics. This dangerous thinking prevents billions worldwide from accessing the benefits of AI: accessible healthcare, reduction of human error, better education, and many more. Instead of protecting the jobs lost due to AI, the government should protect the workers it impacts. There are two policies necessary to harness the power of AI to protect the working class: wealth redistribution and innovative social development programs.

Wealth inequality has skyrocketed in the age of automation, where the manufacturing sector has become increasingly vacant, and employers have used technology to maximize productivity and minimize employees. Yet, college-educated workers have not had this same fate. Those with degrees saw their salaries rise due to their further education, but even the college-educated may lose their job to technology as it progresses. Without wealth redistribution, the future may be bleak as the wealthy will utilize AI to create and hoard wealth without compensating workers. That said, there needs to be policy to increase taxation on the rich while closing loopholes in tax law to redistribute wealth and hinder intergenerational wealth.

This increase in tax funding needs to be invested in innovative social development programs to educate those of all ages on how to use technology to maintain a job in a world of AI. These programs will allow everyone to invest in the AI economy while giving the government some control.

The spirit of the TED talk is to spread ideas that advance humanity. We must make sure that the ideas we spread are beneficial for all of us, not just for the few. A strong society is defined by the people’s will to protect the most underprivileged in society. Thus, in the fight for equity, there cannot be complacency but action in governance to harness AI for the best benefit of all.
